Dosshouse Blues was John O’Loughlin’s first real collection of poems, written on and off during 1973-75, and it reflects the lyricism and formal simplicity of youth, revealing the influence of poets like Rimbaud, Ezra Pound, Adrian Henri, and Doors lead singer Jim Morrison on his formative years as a writer. Although technically and thematically modest, this introductory collection is by no means an insignificant start to Mr O’Loughlin’s literary vocation, which began pleasantly enough in the semi-rural environs of Merstham, Surrey before progressing firstly to Finsbury Park and subsequently to Crouch End in north London (where he got the inspiration for the title poem).  All in all, Dosshouse Blues will intrigue and even console those of a sensitive disposition who have personal experience of solitary life in cheap urban lodgings. - A Centretruths editorial.
